Bracken returns to being a normal puppy again!

Bracken was a 5 month old Irish Wolfhound puppy who came to the Windaroo Veterinary Surgery Animal Hospital because his owner noticed he was limping on one of his back legs. Dr Lisa Roberts examined him and found he had a very sore back left leg, and he had a high temperature. Blood tests were run to check when was going on systemically, and they found that he had a high white blood cell count which suggested there may be an infection somewhere.

Dr Lisa suspected there may be an infection in the bone, which is why Bracken was so sore on his leg. Bracken was started on strong antibiotics and he started to improve. A week after he finished the antibiotics he was still sore, and any exercise made him worse. When Dr Lisa re-examined him, she found swelling near his knee, and he was sore in this area. A plan was made to desex Bracken, and whilst he was anaesthetised, x-rays were taken of his joints. There were significant changes to the bones which supported a possible bone infection, and he was started on strong antibiotics again for 4 weeks. There was some concern that there could be ongoing problems if the infection affected his growth plates, but fortunately for Bracken and his owner, there hasn’t been any evidence to suggest there will be ongoing issues. Weeks after he initially came in with a sore leg, followup x-rays were taken to check the progress of the bone infection- the bone looked completely normal once again! Now Bracken can go back to being a normal happy, active Wolfhound puppy!
